Can I work in Thailand on a marriage visa?

Yes. A marriage visa allows you to live in Thailand as the spouse of a Thai national, but it does not automatically give you the right to work. If you want to work in Thailand, you must still have a work permit. However, marriage visa holders benefit from reduced work permit requirements, including lower registered capital and Thai employee quotas.

Marrying a Thai national makes it easier to obtain a work permit, but it does not remove the requirement altogether. Employers sponsoring a foreign employee who is married to a Thai citizen benefit from lower registered capital requirements and reduced Thai employee quotas. A marriage visa is also not tied to employment, so if the foreign national ever leaves or loses their job, they can remain in Thailand, as long as they continue to meet the requirements of their marriage visa

A Non-Immigrant O Visa based on marriage allows you to live in Thailand if you are legally married to a Thai citizen. However, the visa itself does not give you the right to work. Before starting work, whether as an employee or as a director of your own company, you must first obtain a valid work permit. Another advantage for foreigners married to a Thai national is that the marriage visa can make it easier to meet some of the requirements for obtaining a work permit.

One of the main advantages of applying for a work permit through a marriage visa is that the company requirements are reduced. Instead of the standard requirement of THB 2 million in registered capital and four Thai employees for each foreign worker, a company employing a foreign national married to a Thai citizen only needs THB 1 million in registered capital and two Thai employees. This can make starting or joining a business in Thailand more straightforward for married couples.
