New Domain Name Requirements For Companies Registered In Cambodia

A recent ministerial statement has made some changes to the content of domain names for business websites and email addresses.

The use of a so-called national level 2 domain is now mandatory for all companies registered in Cambodia. The most cited example of this is “.com.kh”.

Companies have until 1 January 2023 to comply with this requirement.

Content of the domain name

Domain names can be in Khmer or in a foreign language. The name in question must, however, consist of a letter, a hyphen, a number or a combination of the three. In addition, the concerned Ministry has the right to reject any application for domain names, or reserved domain names, or those deemed offensive to local traditions or religious beliefs.

It should also be noted that the new regulation places some restrictions on certain domain names that can only be used by specific entities.

These include .gov.kh, which is reserved for ministries and other public institutions, and .edu.kh, which is reserved for educational institutions (public or private). The .org.kh domain name is reserved for NGOs, associations and trade unions, while the .net.kh domain name can only be used by companies providing computer or Internet services.

What is the registration process?

The procedure for registering a domain name is carried out at the MPTC and consists simply of submitting an application form accompanied by certified copies of the company’s certificate of incorporation and an identity document. Depending on the case, a copy of your Cambodian trademark registration may also be required.

Domain names are valid for one year, after which the company must renew them and pay a fee to the MOC. After expiration, and if the renewal fee is not paid, the domain will be temporarily suspended. After 60 days without payment, the domain name will be deleted.

How much does registration cost?

The cost of registering a new compliant domain name costs around USD 100. The renewal fee is approximately USD 30 per year.
