Frequently asked questions

Will I get my visa immediately after submitting my application?

No, you will normally receive your visa 15 days after the submission of your application. The reason for this is that after submitting your application you will get an ‘Under Consideration stamp’ in your passport. The Immigration Officers will use this time to go through and check your application. After 15 days, you go back to the Immigration Office and collect your visa.

Can I enter Thailand as a tourist and apply for the Non-Immigrant O Visa and Extension in Thailand?

A foreigner who enters Thailand on a visa exemption stamp or a tourist visa can apply for a retirement visa. However, the applicant must be able to meet the requirements for the non-immigrant O visa or the one year extension visa applications. This can be done at the immigration office in Thailand.

Are there any restrictions to consider when applying for a retirement visa?

Once you have received your retirement visa, you are allowed to stay in Thailand for one year. You are not allowed to undertake employment while on this type of visa. You must report to Immigration every 90 days to verify your current address.

How do I prove I have satisfied the financial requirements?

If using a security deposit, you will need to show an updated passbook/bank book which is in your name and from Thai bank. A letter from the bank clearly stating that at least 800,000 baht was deposited in your account from an overseas source, and has been cleared at least 2 months prior to the date of your retirement visa application is also required.

If using monthly income, you will need to provide a 12-month bank statement showing a regular monthly deposit of 65,000 Thai Baht into a Thai bank account. You will also need a certified bank letter from your Embassy in Thailand.

Can I leave and re-enter Thailand?

If you hold a multiple entry visa, you can enter and leave Thailand as many times as you like during the validity of your Visa.

If you possess a single entry visa or an extension of stay based on retirement, you will need to obtain a re-entry permit. Re-entry permits can be obtained from the Immigration Office.
