Can I work with a Thailand Privilege (Elite) visa?

No. A Thailand Privilege Visa (previously known as the Thailand Elite Visa) does not allow the holder to work in Thailand or apply for a work permit. If you want to work for a Thai employer or operate a business in Thailand, you will need the appropriate visa, usually a Non-Immigrant B visa together with a work permit.

Unfortunately, no. Many people assume that because the Thailand Privilege Visa is obtained through a paid membership and offers long-term residency, it also gives them the right to work in Thailand. However, that is not the case. The Thailand Privilege Visa allows you to stay in Thailand for an extended period, but it does not replace a Non-Immigrant B visa or a work permit. If a holder decides to take up employment or operate a business in Thailand, they must first obtain the appropriate visa and work authorisation.

The Thailand Privilege Visa is intended for people who want to live in Thailand long term, not for those who plan to work. Although it offers benefits such as extended stays, concierge services, and multiple-entry privileges, it does not provide any employment rights or make the holder eligible for a work permit. Anyone who intends to work in Thailand must obtain the appropriate immigration status before starting work.

This often catches investors and entrepreneurs by surprise. Simply owning shares in a Thai company is not a problem, but becoming actively involved in running the business is a different matter. If your plans change after obtaining a Thailand Privilege Visa, there are several immigration options that may be more suitable, including a Non-Immigrant B visa, BOI-supported work authorisation, the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa, or the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), depending on your circumstances and the type of work you intend to undertake.
