The 90-day non-immigrant B visa is issued to foreigners who plan to enter Thailand for work or business purposes.
This particular visa grants the holder a 90-day stay inside Thailand. Holders of a non-immigrant B visa must enter Thailand within 90 days from the date of issuance of the visa.
Once holders of a non-immigrant B visa have entered Thailand, they must apply for a work permit. Once they have obtained their work permit and have less than 30 days of validity remaining on their stay, they apply for a one-year business visa extension.
This process for extending the visas takes place in Thailand at the relevant Immigration Department, and the applicant does not need to leave Thailand.
What are the requirements for obtaining a non-immigrant B visa?
Obtaining a 90-day non-immigrant visa must be done outside of Thailand in practice, typically in the applicant’s home country.
The requirements for applying for the 90-day non-immigrant visa include
- A passport with at least six months validity from the date of your planned arrival in Thailand
- An invitation or confirmation letter to clarify the purpose of travel issued by the concerned organization
- Additional supporting documents as requested by the relevant Royal Thai Embassy or consulate
- Embassy fee
For westerners who are in Thailand and want to avoid returning to their home country to apply for a Non-B visa, Singapore, Malaysia, or Cambodia are often popular destinations.
It is possible to apply for a Non-Immigrant B visa at the Immigration Office in Thailand if the foreigner holds a valid Tourist visa (TR) or visa exemption (with the validity remaining being no less than 15 days). However, this method is not a popular choice as the process is more cumbersome when compared to applying abroad. This is because additional documents, such as the WP3 (a pre-validation of the work permit), are usually requested when using from within Thailand but is not required when applying abroad. However, the ability to do so depends on the circumstances of the employer/company and whether they can provide the required documents in time.
What is the 90-day non immigrant visa application process?
Step 1. Prepare the application form (Form TM 47) and other required supporting documents.
Step 2. Submit the required documents to the Thai Embassy or consulate in your home country (please note some countries now use the e-visa system, and all the necessary documents can be uploaded to the website).
Step 3. Pay the embassy or consulate fees.
Step 4. The embassy or consulate will review and process the visa application (processing time may take 2 – 5 business days).
What are the required documents?
The following documents are usually required by the Thai Embassy/Consulate when applying for a non-immigrant B visa:
- Letter confirming employment details from an employer by an authorised person
- Copy of ID card or passport of the signer (authorised person who signed the employment letter)
- Invitation letter from a company in Thailand
- Company affidavit of the inviting company in Thailand with the company’s stamp and authorised person’s signature
- Financial evidence e.g. bank statements, proof of earnings, proof of sponsorship from a third party
- Confirmation of legal residence of the country of application.
Overstaying your visa
Overstaying your visa in Thailand is illegal and could result in the offending party receiving a monetary fine and being blacklisted from entering Thailand. If you overstay for less than 90 days, you will only have to pay a fine.
The fine for overstaying is THB 500 per day, and the maximum penalty is THB 20,000 when overstaying for 40 days or more.
However, if you overstay for more than 90 days, you will be deported and banned from visiting Thailand. If you cannot pay the fine or overstay for a long period, you can be taken to jail.

- Expert: You have at least a BA Degree and are employed in a position in which you have to work in for at least three consecutive years.
